Watch and Pray
Watch and Pray
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. —Luke 21: 36
God has been patient and longsuffering. He has put up with an awful lot of abuse, but the day is coming when the Lord will take His vengeance. Jesus had just described for His disciples the great tribulation period, that time when God will unleash the forces of nature. Cataclysmic signs in the heavens will cause famine, pestilence, and tremendous earthquakes. But immediately after those events, Jesus said, “They will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” (Luke 21: 27).
**The only way to be found worthy to escape the great tribulation is by receiving Jesus Christ and the forgiveness He offers.
As He was describing these events, Jesus instructed us to pray for two things. First, that we will be accounted worthy to escape the coming calamity, and secondly, that we might stand before the Son of Man.
The children of God have not been appointed to wrath but will stand in that glorious company in heaven singing the worthiness of the Lamb to take the scroll and to break the seals.
Jesus did warn in verse 34, “Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.” Don’t let life steal your attention. Don’t be unprepared for His coming. Be watching and praying—always.
Lord, our hope is built on nothing less than the blood of Jesus and His righteousness. Deliver us from the wrath to come, we pray. In Jesus’ name, amen.
