Two Questions
But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” —Mark 4: 40
The disciples had good reasons to be fearful: a fierce storm had come upon them, waves sloshed over the bow, and the boat was beginning to sink. And yet, the Lord slept through the storm.
When trouble comes upon us, overwhelming us with its intensity, threatening to sink us, it can sometimes seem that the Lord isn’t concerned with our predicament. Our calls go unanswered and we wonder why the Lord isn’t helping, why our situation isn’t changing.
We never face a storm alone. The Lord is with us—always. And when Jesus is on board, there’s no need to fear. Jesus had two questions. After asking, “Why are you so fearful?” He then asked, “How is it that you have no faith?” When our problems seem big, our faith can get small. It was fear that caused the disciples to lose their faith.
**Fear is a sign that we don’t trust God’s ability to take care of our situation.
It is glorious to know that our heavenly Father is watching over us, that He loves us, that He cares for us, and that He is in control. When we don’t understand what is happening around us, we can still trust Jesus. We don’t need to fear. Jesus is on board, He is able to calm the storm, and He will bring us safely into that eternal harbor.
Father, we thank You for the peace of Christ that passes human understanding, that in the midst of the storm our hearts can be at rest because our trust is in You. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.
