WISDOM FOR TODAY
True Wisdom
Vision 2020
The world in which we live places great value on knowledge. But people don’t always strive to know the most important things. The truth is you may be extremely knowledgeable about insects, or stars, or the sciences. You may be very wise about those sorts of things and people might really admire you for that knowledge. That’s all well and good, but if you don’t have the wisdom of God, you’re missing the most important knowledge a man can ever hope to attain.
How do you gain the wisdom of God? Proverbs tells us that, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (9: 10). Wisdom starts when we begin to reverence God above all other things. And when that reverence moves us to seek God through His Word, we gain understanding.
But in the quest for wisdom, God has not left us to our own devices. He made a provision for us. He is such a good Father like that—always helping us in our weaknesses, always providing where we lack. And He so desires that we attain wisdom that He sent a special blessing to help us in that quest.
In looking toward His own death, Jesus prepared His disciples by promising them that He would not leave them as orphans in this world, but would send them a Comforter and a Guide. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14: 16-17). And then Jesus named the Comforter and promised this concerning Him: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14: 26).
**What a marvelous promise we have been given! God has put His Holy Spirit within us.
He will dwell in us forever—and will teach us all that we need to know. In fact, John writes elsewhere that, “You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (1 John 2: 20). The Holy Spirit, abiding within us, reveals God’s truths to our hearts. As we are reading God’s Word, He makes it come alive. It might be a verse you have read dozens of times before, but at the time when you most need it, the Holy Spirit brings it to life and makes it jump off the page.
***What a blessing the Holy Spirit is to us.
How He ministers to us! His work in our individual lives and in the church is so very important. But tragically, men have tried to substitute the wisdom of the Holy Spirit with the wisdom of man. We have convinced ourselves that spiritual wisdom can be attained only after studying Greek and Hebrew. We think that what qualifies a man to instruct people in the Word of truth is a seminary degree. But I have to disagree with that theory. It’s not a degree on the wall that qualifies a man—it’s the Holy Spirit in the heart. I would rather listen to an uneducated man who is filled with the Holy Spirit than some doctor of theology who is not filled with the Spirit, and who approaches the Bible as just an interesting piece of literature on the subject of moral values.
I pray that you become wise in all the things that matter most. And I pray that you remember the anointing you have from God. Cherish that anointing. Cherish the ministry of the Holy Spirit in your heart as you study the Word and as you draw close to the Lord. Wisdom is yours for the taking. God desires to give it to you. Honor Him, meditate on His Word, and obey whatever He asks you to do. And as you study your bible, invite the Holy Spirit to guide you daily into all truth. (Chuck Smith)
