True Riches
True Riches
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.—1 Timothy 6: 6
People often say, “Oh, if only I won the lottery!” But you might be surprised. Studies have shown that quite frequently, those giant jackpots mess up the winners’ lives. They go from being happy-go-lucky to being anxious. Though they thought the money would bring them great happiness, in many cases it only brought sorrow.
Men scrape and sweat to build their wealth, but in the day of judgment those riches will be of no value, because you can’t buy God off. True riches, however, are eternal. They last forever; nothing can diminish them. You can be poor in this world and yet be an heir of the kingdom of God.
**Earthly riches are a complete sham.
Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight'” (Jeremiah 9: 23-24).
“I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content,” Paul said. “I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need” (Philippians 4: 11-12).
* Instead of striving to accumulate more, let’s learn the value of contentment.
Father, we thank You that You have offered us such vast riches. Teach us what it is to be content with what You have given us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
