The Sin of Prejudice
The Sin of Prejudice
I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.—1 Timothy 5: 21
Paul has been instructing Timothy on such matters as taking care of the widows, his relationship with the church elders, rules for the young women, and so forth. Then he said, “Timothy, you are not to show preferential treatment or partiality. See that you observe these things without preferring one above another.”
Throughout the Bible we are told that God is not a respecter of persons. But unfortunately, we often do show partiality. We are prone to honor the rich and sort of shuttle the poor aside, but God isn’t like that. He is just as concerned in saving the soul of the poorest man on the face of the earth as He is the richest. Social standing means nothing to God; we all exist on the same level and on the same plane.
** If we call ourselves by His name, we need to develop His perspective on prejudice.
It doesn’t matter how much success you have accomplished, how much wealth you have accumulated, or who you are in terms of the world’s ranking. It doesn’t matter if you dwell in a mansion or a shack. Regardless of how anyone else views you, you matter to Jesus.
We must find a way to dissolve the differences between us. How can we reach a lost world if we don’t view them the way Jesus does? We need to learn to love as He loved, and to value others because they matter so much to Him.
Father, thank You for Your great love for us. Help us to love with Your love—without preference or partiality. In Jesus’ name, amen.
