WISDOM FOR TODAY
The Patient God
The Patient God
He who formed the eye, shall He not see? …shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? —Psalm 94:9-10
Sometimes people take the attitude that God doesn’t see or know when they sin. However, it isn’t ineptness that keeps Him from judging. Nor is it a lack of concern. And it isn’t due to weakness.
**It is love that causes God to be so patient and longsuffering with the wicked, giving opportunity after opportunity for them to turn, to repent, to change.
But the wicked misinterpret His patience as weakness. They speak blasphemously against Him. “Does God know? Has He seen? Does He really hear?” Their assumption is that He doesn’t because surely He would have done something about it if He did.
How blind we are— deliberately— to the history of mankind. God allowed those in Sodom to go a long way in their rebellion— so far that the homosexuals paraded in the streets and became physically aggressive. God allowed those in Noah’s days to go so far that they threw off moral restraint and every man did what was right in his own sight. But God eventually judged that age and destroyed those people.
How long can God allow our nation to turn its back on Him? How far will God let us go? He has been far more patient than I could ever dream. But don’t mistake the patience of God as weakness, tolerance, or approval. For the day of God’s righteous judgment shall come.
Father, how desperately we need You. Our world is wicked and rebellious. We need You to step in and stop men from destroying themselves. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done here on the earth, even as it is in heaven. Amen.
