The Mystery
…great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory. —1 Timothy 3: 16
There is a tremendous mystery to godliness—to the fact that man becomes like his god. In speaking of the mute, deaf, blind, immobile idols of the heathen, the psalmist declares that, “Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them” (Psalm 115: 8). It is a basic psychological truth that a man becomes like his god. If your god is loving, then you become loving. If your god is good, you become good. If your god is hateful and bitter, then you become hateful and bitter.
** We who follow God are being changed to be like Him day by day.
The Bible tells us that, “We are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3: 2). How I love to see this mystery unfolding in my own life, to see the changes He makes day by day as I follow and serve Him. David said, “I will be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.” And one day I will wake and find I am in heaven, and I will be just like Him. That is the mystery of godliness: the transformed life made into His image.
Father, thank You for the power of Your Spirit to transform a person’s life and conform them into Your image. Work in our hearts and lives this day. Help us to yield to Your touch, never resisting what You want to do in us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
