The Curse of Sin
The Curse of Sin
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)…—Galatians 3: 13
The law God gave the children of Israel was for their benefit, for their blessing. But the law is harsh. The law carries a curse, which says those who would not obey the law must die. As James pointed out, “Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2: 10). If you are trying to be righteous before God by keeping the law and yet you violate one point, then you come under the curse of the law.
So we are guilty. We are deserving of death. Yet Jesus took our sins and died in our place. Not only does that mean we don’t have to suffer the curse of the law, it also means that we are blessed. His sacrifice brought us the blessings of Abraham. For we read, “That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3: 14).
**Through His death on the tree, Jesus brought us freedom, deliverance, forgiveness, righteousness, and hope.
Oh, the blessings of God that have come upon me through Jesus Christ! How good He is, and how loved we are, that He would become the curse for us, that He would endure so much shame, so much pain, that we might be freed from the curse of the law!
Father, how grateful we are that You sent Your Son to redeem us from the curse of the law. How grateful we are for Your love and mercy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
