The Cry for a Mediator
The Cry for a Mediator
For He is not a man, as I am, that I may answer Him, and that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, who may lay his hand on us both. —Job 9: 32-33
“If you will just get right with God,” Job’s friends advised, “everything else will be okay.” But Job didn’t know how to do that. He saw the greatness of God compared with his own smallness, and realized that the gap between the infinite God and the finite creature is too great for man to ever bridge himself. Recognizing his dilemma, Job cried out for a mediator. In the New Testament we read, “There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2: 5).
**Jesus is the bridge between God and man.
Because Jesus and the Father are one (John 10: 30), He is able to touch God. Because Jesus “became flesh and dwelt among us,” (John 1: 14), He also touches us. He understands our weaknesses, our fears, our temptations. And thus, Jesus is able to bring us to God. This bridge that brought man to God was not created by man. Unlike other religions, in Christianity, man is not trying to reach God—God reaches down to man. If you want to find the eternal, true and living God, you can touch Him only by allowing Him to touch you through His Son, Jesus.
Father, we are so thankful You have provided that means whereby we may be justified, not by our own works of righteousness, but by our simple believing and trusting in our Mediator, Jesus Christ, the One making intercession for us. Amen.
