WISDOM FOR TODAY
Sing and Rejoice
Sing and Rejoice
“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord. “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people.” —Zechariah 2: 10-11
When the people returned to the city from their Babylonian captivity, Jerusalem was wasted and desolate. But Zechariah encouraged them that someday, God will choose Jerusalem again. The Lord of hosts will take His portion again in Judah and will dwell in the midst of His people.
**The only thing that provokes singing and rejoicing in my heart is the promise of the coming of Jesus Christ.
The prospect of the coming of the Lord should inspire singing and rejoicing in our hearts. As I look at the world today, I don’t see much to rejoice in or to sing over. My heart weeps for the abounding evil we see around us. Nothing in this world inspires the kind of rejoicing the prophet refers to in this passage. Every day that passes brings us one day closer to that glorious day—that day of singing and rejoicing, when the Lord shall come and dwell in the midst of the people. We live in momentous times, when events are coming together to usher in the return of Jesus. As long as God gives us breath, we need to warn others of the evil days to come, but we also need to proclaim the glorious day that is coming—the day of the Lord’s return. Lord, may Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth, even as it is in heaven. Our hearts long for that day when You will dwell in peace and righteousness in the midst of Your people! Amen.
