WISDOM FOR TODAY

Paul’s Prayer

…to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God … —Colossians 1: 9-10
From the time he first heard of their faith in Jesus, Paul prayed continuously for the believers in Colossi. First, he prayed that they might be filled with the knowledge of His will, and he asked that this knowledge come through wisdom and spiritual understanding. That’s the key to knowing God’s will for you. Your flesh might pull you in one direction or another, but God’s Spirit in you will guide you in fulfilling God’s specific, individual, sovereign purpose.
**It is only as we walk in the strength and the power of the Spirit of God that we could ever hope to walk worthy of the Lord.
Then Paul prayed that they might walk worthy of the Lord. Is this possible in our own strength? Not even remotely. As His adopted children, we must live according to the code of the royal family. To walk worthy is to walk in love, purity and peace. It is to walk in faith. Paul’s next petition for them was that they might be fruitful in every good work.
Our good works result from our relationship with Jesus. As His life flows into us, it naturally produces fruit. Lastly, Paul asked that they increase in their knowledge of God. All we need to know about God has been revealed to us in His Word. What a beautiful prayer—and it’s for you too.
Father, teach us Your ways and guide us in Your truth, that our lives will be a reflection of Jesus. Amen.
