WISDOM FOR TODAY

ONE STEP

ONE STEP
David took an oath again, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.” —1 Samuel 20:3
David just had a close encounter with death. Saul had tried to kill him, and David realized he could lose his life at any time.
Close calls make us aware of just how close death is. No matter how healthy or strong I may be, there is just one step between me and death.
If death is so inevitable, and so close, how should I live? First, I shouldn’t live for this life only.
*I should live in constant preparedness for eternity.
The Bible teaches that the real me is spirit, not body. The body is only a tent. But one day I will move out of this tent and into a mansion. If I live in fellowship with God through Jesus Christ, I won’t take that step between life and death. According to the word of Jesus, if I live and believe in Him I will never die—but I will move. I’ll move out of this tent into that building of God. So there is one step between me and eternity.
I look forward to that move. For you see, even though I have not yet seen Him, I love Him and rejoice with a joy unspeakable, full of glory in the anticipation of that day when I shall stand beside my Lord, in that new body, in His eternal kingdom.
Thank You, Father, for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Amen.
