WISDOM FOR TODAY

Not A Word

NOT A WORD
And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. —Matthew 15:22-23
The woman’s plea was passionate, but Jesus answered her not a word. When He finally did speak, it was to the disciples. He declared to them that the woman was outside of the covenant God had made with Israel. But the woman wasn’t discouraged. In fact, she agreed with Jesus. “That is true, Lord. I don’t deserve it. But I’m not asking for bread—only for the crumbs that fall from the table.”
**God’s silence doesn’t always mean “no.”
Jesus knew from the beginning that He would heal her daughter. Yet He wanted to draw the woman’s faith out to its fullest expression. Each time He took one step back, she came two steps closer. Refusing to become discouraged, she held on until she heard the words she wanted to hear, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire” (Matthew 15:28).
Sometimes, God is simply waiting. He might be working in your heart, or tarrying in order to strengthen your faith. Don’t get discouraged when the answer is not immediately forthcoming. Hold on. Keep asking. Demonstrate your faith, and wait for the words you long to hear, “Let it be as you desire.”
Father, draw us ever closer to You, into a more intimate, complete relationship.
Teach us patience as we wait for Your response to our requests. Strengthen our faith, and give us opportunities to prove that faith to You. May we rest in Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
