WISDOM FOR TODAY
Knowing God
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him… —Ephesians 1: 17
The natural man cannot understand the deep things of God except by His Spirit. “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2: 14). Without the Holy Spirit, we can know nothing of God except that He is.
We know that God exists, in part, because His creation testifies of Him. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the earth shows His handiwork. Day after day they utter their speech, night after night reveals knowledge” (Psalm 19: 1-2). Because He is so clearly revealed in nature, men are without excuse when it comes to knowing that God exists.
But more than just knowing He exists, we can know God’s character by looking at Jesus. He came to reveal God to man. “God has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1: 1-2). Jesus said, “If you have seen Me you have seen the Father” (John 14: 9). We know of God’s mercy, grace, compassion, kindness, and love because we see those things in Jesus. He is God in the flesh.
Through nature, through the Word, and through Jesus, we can come to a saving knowledge of God the Father.
***As we begin to walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit then teaches us the deep truths of God.
How blessed we are to know God!
Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to us, that we might know the joy of living in fellowship with You and have the hope of eternal life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
